The Beginning

Before overtonight became a public project, Stephen was writing and recording because he wanted to make music.

Where it started

He has said that he began writing songs at 16 years old. The earliest version of the project was intensely DIY: he recorded music late at night from a car parked in an empty lot.

Before there was a public audience, music was personal. He has described keeping songs on private SoundCloud links and driving around listening to his own recordings.

Before Anyone Was Listening

Stephen's early approach centered on experimentation, inexpensive recording setups and making songs because they sounded interesting to him. He started with BandLab and later moved into more advanced setups, but the roughness of the original process never stopped being important to the sound.

In the interview, he explained that he eventually found himself deliberately making recordings worse because cleaner equipment could make the music feel less immediate. He has returned to BandLab and Apple-earbud microphones because the imperfect sound is part of what he calls “headphone music.”

He also described posting consistently to social media when the numbers were tiny. Some early posts received around 50 views; one reaching roughly 800 views felt like a major milestone.

After graduating high school in 2024, he started college but continued building overtonight. He has described making social-media content in places such as college bathrooms around 3 A.M. before eventually leaving college after roughly a semester and a half to pursue music.

How It Built Up

The Sound

The music crosses several scenes rather than staying inside one genre.

Overtonight's music crosses indiecore, alternative/indie rock, bedroom pop, alternative rap and left-field pop. Public biographies also point to early-2000s pop-punk and modern emo-rap as influences.

His musical path was not linear. He experimented with indie and alternative sounds, became interested in underground/rage rap, learned production through that scene, and later returned to indie and alternative music with those influences still informing the project.

Make It Feel Real

For overtonight, lo-fi isn't simply a limitation — it can be part of the point.

Stephen described a shift in how he thinks about production. After spending time improving microphones, mixing and recording quality, he felt that some of the music was becoming technically better but emotionally weaker. The solution was to stop treating higher fidelity as automatically better.

He has gone back to the kind of setup he started with, including BandLab and earbud microphones, because the rough texture fits the way he hears the project. He described the intended feeling as “headphone music” — something made to live with friends, in a car, or in an ordinary moment rather than something that needed to sound like a polished studio production.

Visual language

The same idea carries into the visuals. Stephen talked about using old VHS cameras, digicams and even an iPhone 4 for photos and videos, leaning into the nostalgia and candid feeling of older digital media.

One song became the entrance to a much larger world.

Released in July 2025, mirrors demo became one of the defining songs of the project.

Stephen has described the track's later online explosion as a turning point. Released in July 2025, it initially sat on the overtonight throwaways account before a TikTok post around September pushed it into a much wider audience. He described its growth from roughly 1,000 daily streams to around 500,000 daily streams at its peak.

At the same time, “Shotgun.” was taking off on Instagram Reels, giving the project a second viral path outside TikTok. Stephen's point was that the breakout worked because there was already a deeper catalog waiting behind it.

In the interview, he said the song's strange structure — including the way it slows at the end — felt distinctly like overtonight. That helped turn a viral moment into curiosity about the rest of the catalog rather than leaving listeners with only one hit.

Where The Sound Comes From

Public venue and music biographies associate overtonight with a mixture of early-2000s pop-punk/alternative rock and modern emo-rap.

Stephen's own account adds another layer: his experimentation with underground/rage rap wasn't separate from the later alternative sound; he considers that period part of how he learned to produce and shape music.

He also connects the project's visual language to a broader nostalgia for older digital media: VHS cameras, digicams, old-phone photos and deliberately imperfect video can feel more immediate to him than pristine modern footage.

The Rabbit Hole

The project was designed to feel larger than a discography.

Stephen has explained that he wanted the project to be more than a single viral track. He spent time building songs, videos, leaks, images, social posts and lore so that discovering one song could lead listeners deeper into the project.

He also wanted to show his face early rather than hiding behind anonymity, even though face-less presentation is common in parts of the underground scene.

The rough visual and audio material became part of the identity instead of being treated as disposable early work.
